Get Glowing: Maybelline Fit Me Concealer vs. Maybelline Dream Lumi Highlighting Concealer

Don't you just love the soft glow you see on models and celebrities in magazines?   You can get a similar look with highlighting.  Good highlighting can make your skin look healthy and refreshed and helps to accentuate the positive along with giving a subtle glow to the complexion.

Highlighted Areas

I like to highlight my face in the following areas: under eyes, center of  my forehead, down the bridge of my nose, cupid's bow, top of cheek bones, brow bones, and center of my chin.

Primadonna Tip: If you don't have time to add highlighting to your morning makeup routine, try highlighting for special occasions and/or when you know you will be photographed.)

Maybelline Fit Me Concealer in Deep

In the past I've used Iman Second to None Concealer and L'oreal Concealer Crayon but neither gave me the soft luminous look I was after.

Recently I have been using Maybelline Fit Me in Deep.  I like the wand applicator and the thin consistency allows it to be blended easily.  I apply it by placing it over my foundation and blending with a concealer brush.  I usually set it with Mac Skin Finish Natural in Dark because setting with Ben Nye Banana Powder makes it look a bit ashy.  While I like the overall look when I first apply, as the day wears on, it does tend to fade; despite the setting powder.

Out of curiosity I decided to try  Maybelline Dream Lumi Highlighting Concealer.   I watched a few youtube videos and read reviews that claimed Maybelline Dream Lumi provided more coverage due to a thicker consistency. Many reviews even compared it to the holy grail of highlighters; Yves Saint Laurent 'Touch E'clat Radiant Touch. I've always wanted to try the YSL version, but since $40 is out of budget, I decided to give Dream Lumi a try.  Perhaps the thicker consistency would prevent fading.  Also, Maybelline Fit Me is not a highlighter, but a concealer, so I thought a HIGHLIGHTING concealer would give a more luminous effect.

I usually try to choose a concealer for highlighting that is about two shades lighter than my natural skin tone, but much like Maybelline Fit Me, the color options for Dream Lumi are limited for women of color. I decided to go with the darkest shade available; honey.

The applicator on this concealer is different from the Maybelline Fit Me. You have to twist the bottom portion of the concealer several times and the product comes out onto the applicator brush.  The first application requires several twists to get the product flowing.  Dream Lumi is thicker than Maybelline Fit Me and has pretty good coverage. If you actually need concealer to cover darkness in the under eye area it may help a lot more than Maybelline Fit Me. It is also more luminous due to it being an actual HIGHLIGHTING concealer.

Maybelline Dream Lumi in Honey Before Applying Foundation

I tried applying Dream Lumi on top of my foundation like I normally do with my Maybelline Fit Me concealer. Though it came out of the applicator a peach color, blending into my skin with a concealer brush made it so light it was near white and impossible to blend with my foundation. I decided to try a  different technique and highlight first. Then I put my foundation over the highlight. I set with Ben Nye Banana Powder.

The luminosity remained despite being covered with foundation and it gave me a much more dramatic glow than the Maybelline Fit Me Concealer.

I think Maybelline Fit Me is more subtle because it is simply a concealer. Maybelline  Dream Lumi is an actual highlighter so it has more luminosity hence the effect is more dramatic. Though I prefer the more luminous highlight,  I would be happier if Dream Lumi came in a darker shade. Also, after a week of using this product, I got several bumps under each eye. I think I may be be allergic to one of the ingredients. I guess my search for the perfect affordable highlighting concealer continues.  My next try will be Sleek Makeup's Luminaire Concealer Highlighter. I'll keep you all posted!

  1. This was really helpful! Searching for a highlighter for my skin as a medium tone black woman. Considering this brand. Still undecided but this gave me some insight into how this brand works. Thanks!
